I'm kicking around the idea of getting a 170 headsail to be able to go head-to-head with the Hunter 25 in my club. Anyone have any ideas where I could get a used sail? I'd rather not buy new, mostly because I'm a cheap skate.
Okay, new question, sorry again for the rambling...
In searching some of the databases from lofts in our links section, they refer to the measurements of the luff, leach and foot. Can anyone tell me what those measurements would be for a 170 on a standard rig?
Last week the PHRF Chairman forgot to measure the sail, and winds were too strong for a 170, so he sailed with his 150. Subsequently, we smoked him on the race course.
The PHRF chairman and Vice Commodore alledgedly have a time scheduled before Wednesday's race to measure the guys sail. Even when they see it is oversized though, the penalty won't change any standings. It will be nice to have things evened up a little though.
It is my suspicion that the gain from sailing a 170 greatly outweighs the penalty you get when sailing the 170. It's just a feeling I have though.
I know where you might be able to get a nearly new 170 mylar that will fly in butterfly breath. It will not be cheap but it will astound people around you.
There's a Ranger23 on my lake that flys a mylar 170. Its amazing to watch this boat zoom past us while we wait for a breeze to give us steerage way. If you lose 2 or so points to PHRF, I'd say it would be worth it.
I had Cruising Direct custon make me a 170 in Asia. Amazingly enough, they honored a 10% off coupon I had for North Sails (from the Leukemia Cup). All up, it was about $650. It lifted me from the middle of the pack to the podium. We never sail with anything else. We call it the BAS (Big Ass Sail).
Before buying the BAS, I tried buying a used sail from Bacon Sails. I tried the used sail, and it convinced me I was on the right track, but I took it back because it was too blown out for racing.
