Just about ready to go out and take the sails off the boat for the summer (getting hot--109). Does anyone sail during the summer in AZ at Lake Pleasant? What is the trick to overcoming the sun and the shifty winds? Anyone think of anything else I should consider doing besides removing the sails and motor?
Actually I was wondering the same thing (about sailing in the Arizona oven and if "summerizing" preparations were necessary) although I had a flash yesterday about installing a misting cooling system for the cockpit...hmmm...all that fresh water, a pump and a few nozzles down the boom, it just might work.
Night sailing is a thought at least the sun won't be beating down on us. One problem with night sailing on the lake, especially in the summer, islands start appearing because the lake will go down about 50 feet or so and nothing is marked with lights, so it could be a little dangerous. Also at this time of year the power boats are still going crazy at night (they do hit the islands on occasion), especially with it still being 100 degrees at about 10pm.
50 ft drop?! Wow. 100 degrees at 10pm?! Jeez. But it sounds like your sailing season is maybe 9 months while ours is 6-7 months (NE). Where is Lake Pleasant exactly? Herb Payson is writing a book about trailer sailing for 14 months across America. I can't wait to read it as this is one of my goals along with sailing the ICW to FL & back. It's interesting to hear about others' sailing locales. What are your conditions during the sailing season?
Lake Pleasant is about 10 miles west of I17 at the Carefree exit. This makes it about 20 minutes northwest of the city limits of Phoenix.
During the winter the water is pumped into the lake (1ft per day) from the Colorado river via the CAP, as well as run off from the mountains. This water is then used during the summer months, hence the 50 foot drop. The lake itself is over 200 feet deep in the deepest locations and well over 125 feet at the marina..but there are those islands to be concerned about.
Sailing conditions vary. The lake itself is not very big (6-7 miles long x about 2 miles wide). There is an active sailing club here in AZ which races at the lake. The wind can be shifty because of the mountains it can race around and over. The winter actually has the best wind for us.
