Over Father's Day weekend I sailed the "Renegade" from Bayou Grande in the northwest corner of Pensacola Bay to an anchorage in Santa Rosa Sound off Big Sabine. Big Sabine is a beautiful, natural area on Santa Rosa Island between Pensacola Beach and the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The sail across the bay, under the Pensacola Beach Bridge, and east on the ICW was mostly a broad reach in light, puffy air until I reached Big Sabine. Once there, all 9.9 was needed from the iron genny to head back into the wind, drop sail, motor in to the anchorage. I rafted up with good friends and joined them for cocktails. Later we all went ashore for a low country boil on the beach. We finished dinner and returned to the boats as the sun was setting. After coffee and doughnuts in the morning, we broke up our raft and sailed back, close hauled in moderate, gusty air. Upon reentering Pensacola Bay from the sound, the breeze stiffened for a quick reach back to Bayou Grande. And for everything else, there's Mastercard!

Gary, enjoyed your post, I am going to try to cruise your area in the fall. Did you go to the Lobster and BushWhacker Fest a couple of weeks ago? Spent a week at the Raddison in FWB and visited with friends in P-Cola for the Fest.

Bruce - I've gone to the Bushwhacker fest in the past, but didn't go this year. Perhaps we can meet for a sail when you get back up this way.

Jellyfish - Don't know when I'll be heading towards Big Sabine again, but I'd be interested in trying to arrange something.

Jellyfish, O.K. I'll let you know. Do the same for me if you get up around P'cola Bay. BTW we live near Gulf Breeze. The Admiral volunteers at the Butterfly House.

Jellyfish, I don't recall seeing a blurb on the Butterfly House in Sail. Do you know what issue it was in? And yes Juana's/Sailor's Grill is on my list. I think the group I cruise with is planning a trip this fall. Will try to make it then. Next I'll probably head to P'cola Beach for the Blue Angels show & to Fort McCree. Gary

we do the Blue Angels show every year! it is a tradition, might catch up with ya there. we are thinking about doing Ft McCrae for the 4th. now that is a wonderful little cove there!

Buzz, the Butterfly House is kind of a running joke around here with all the locals. not that it is not a nice place it is, but given all the great places to see and things to do around here, it probally is on the bottom of the list!

Buzz, thanks. Found the magazine & the Butterfly House article. The mag was concealed under a pile of the Admiral's gardening mags.

Jellyfish, I'll be on the lookout for you. I'll try to let you know what my plans are when it gets closer to the 4th. Everything depends on the weather. I don't like to be out during thunderstorms. Gary
