my depth finder is under the v berth not mounted. it was working
last week now it's reading zeros. it was sitting in a puddle of water
and I syphined the water out and now it doesn't work. did the water
act like a seal? and will it read properly if not sealed in water.

Likely it was. Try bedding it in a big blob of silicone- no bubbles- and it should work just fine.

Tom,

The transducer should work through the hull as long as there are no voids, air bubbles, etc. It's possible that the water was filling any voids in the original sealant.

I would remove the transducer, clean it throughly, and clean the area of fiberglass where the transducer is mounted. Then use some kind of slow cure sealant or epoxy to bed the transducer to the fiberglass. Fast cure will contain tiny air bubbles, slow cure does not.

I did this on my old C22, and it worked just fine.

On of my sailing friends used the wax from a toilet ring seal to mount his transducer to the inside of the hull. Says it works great. Just wear rubber gloves when working with the stuff. Gary

Of course if you use a new wax seal instead of a used one, you should be okay without the gloves <img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle>

The "water" was most likely mineral oil. An transducer mounted inside a hull, and not through the hull, must have a liquid medium to go through to work. Thus, the mineral oil between the transducer and the hull acted as that medium allowing the transducer's signal to pass through the hull and hit the sea bottom. Replace the liquid than try again.
