This is the Winter for WOTAM to get a new main and 110 jib so I got a quote from Ullman on same. I was surprised to find that Ullman sails quoted prices now match Catalina Direct's sail prices dollar for dollar... and were up considerably from last year.

The 'regular' fullbatten loose-foot main went up from $689 to $756. (about 10%)

But what really surprised me was the price of a plain 110 jib, which jumped from $554 to $682 in one year (a whopping 23% increase!).

Ullman does offer a 10% discount if I buy a jib and main together, which only takes a bit of the sting out of the increases.

At any rate, I was wondering what other association members were paying for C25 mains or jibs from some of other lofts. I am going to get quotes from a few other west coasts lofts before proceeding... your feedback is appreciated.

On Cruising Direct's website, a 110 jib is $525.00. A main, with one reef, is $715.00.

This past summer, a fellow sailor at my marina replaced his main on his Starwind 22. He purchased it from a loft in Toledo and if I remember correctly, I think he said he paid somewhere around 16 or 17 hundred for it. I asked him if it was some sort of high tech racing sail, and he said, "no, just a no frills main".

If you order a sail from Gary Swenson at Ullman he will build you an anchor riding sail for an additonal 85 bucks. Maybe the price has gone up a little since I bought it 2 years ago, but probably is still a great deal.
I suppose you can find a cheaper sail, but would it be as good? My Ullman holds it's shape really well in 25 knot winds.

Find out when the next major boat show is in your area, and order sails from Cruising Direct at the boat show discount. Cruising Direct sails are made and serviced by North Sails, and they're made of North's Nordac sailcloth. I just ordered a new main and 140% genoa for my C&C 35 at the Annapolis boat show. You can have them made with your choice of either a racing cut or cruising cut, which is an option not often offered by most discount sailmakers, and you can get all kinds of other options. Having had North sails before, I don't doubt that they'll be excellent sails. I got a price from a full service sailmaker for the same sails, and the price was exactly twice the cost from Cruising Direct. For price and quality I think they'll be hard to beat.

I could be wrong, but doesn't Ulman make the sails for Catalina Direct? or is it North, I can't remember? Any ways, if your going to pay that much please think about Doyle sails, I've won two Nationals with the same set of Doyle sails and they hold up remarkably. Mylar or die! ;-}

Steve is right.

Cruising direct not only has their sails made by North, they were founded by and are owned by them too.

Bill has the right idea, shop around - There are a glut of lofts on our links page and still even more smaller outfits up and down the coast...When I was looking for a new challenger pentax 155 racing genny I emailed and called about 25 different lofts and had some details when I talked to the local guy. They will work with you on price....paying cash always helps too.

Have you checked with
Scott Sails
UK
Greiner(not sure if they still exist)
Sobstad
Quantum
North
Shore
Air Force Sails
Doyle
Hallet Sails
