It's time to put the motor to sleep for the winter(nor'east). The Nissan manual requests we remove the propeller and thrust holder and to greece both and the shaft when replacing them.

QUESTION : has anyone had luck removing the trust holder, and if so how did you manage to get it off?

I've been at it on two occasions now, rinsed it well with fresh and lubed with WD-40 and tried to pry it free ( gently. No go.

Hope someone has been there and done so and will share technique.

Online Outboards responded to my query regarding the removal of their thrust holder in which they asked if I had done the maintenance the previous year, and that if it is stubborn try heat. I hope not to heat the unit since there is a drive shaft seal immediately behind it. They responded that that's how they remove them. GREAT!!! And no, they don't have a puller to remove the dang thing.

I hope the many Nissan/Tohatsu owners on this site pay attention to this maintenance requirement especially in light of the fact that the metal used in the manufacture of the thrust holder is not safe in the marine environment. It corrodes like hell. It seems to be a Zamak like alloy.

It seems the old addage , "cheap is cheap" has some relevance in this instance. UNFORTUNATELY

Well it's off finally, and no, it was never packed with grease as the manual recommend that we do when reassembling..better check yours when you are on the hard. Good luck

Val,
I don't understand what is going on here. You mentioned that the thrust holder is made out of some kind of alloy. Do you think the grease is meant to help prevent the corrosion you pointed out? And does this mean it is not necessary to do this procedure in a fresh water environment?

I guess what I am getting at is that I do not want to have to do this.

Regards,
James

In the drawings on pp 58, 59 of the Tohatsu Service Manual, it looks like kind of a collar or spacer that sits on the propellor shaft directly behind the propeller. Apparently it is what you are tightening against when you tighten the propeller nut.

James,

My motor came with the splines dry(no grease)and in one four month season in salt water it froze really hard. The thrust holder, weird name, is made by casting an alloy of unknown metals in under and around a stainless washer. It is splined to match the propeller shaft spline. As mentioned in previous posts pulling the thrust holder and lubing it seasonally is a must. Witness my incident, that in four months it froze to the point that it required heat and penetrating oils to remove it, a problem exsists since the holder rests against what appears to be a rubber ( neoprene) seal. Heating it had to be done carefully lest the seal be damaged. Mess the seal up and you will have to remove the back cover of the lower unit to replace it. It was the kind of job that leaves you with a lump in your throat.

I wrapped everything that wanted to stay cool with heavy duty aluminum foil before using heat. And after much prying it came loose.
