I recently looked at a Catalina 25 for sale (early 80's). On the back of the transom where I expected to find the HIN # (9 digits? 11 digits?) I found a metal plate with a four digit number.
What is the significance of this number - is this the hull number assigned by the builder? Does this replace the longer HIN #, or is the HIN # engraved elsewhere on the boat?
I'm a little confused because I thought all boats built in the U.S. after 1973 were required to have the longer Hull ID #. Can anyone explain this to me?
The long series of numbers usually appears just below the rub rail on the starboard transom (lightly stamped, faintly visible.) The hull or production number is included within this series. The metal plate (mine is located on the cockpit side of the transom) with the four digits is the hull number itself. To give you a point of reference, my boat is a 1981 and the hull # is 2428, the 2,428th one made.
