Last weekend the largest regatta of the year was put on by our sister club on the lake (Lake Canyon Yacht Club). Boats come from all over Texas for it. There were probably 200 entries all told with one design fleets of J-24's, J-22's Catalina 22's, plus a spinnaker fleet and a N-S PHRF fleet with 12 boats. On another course were the multihulls... It was blowing 17 gusting to 25 when we started so we ran the 110 and a full main. On Saturday we took a 1, a 2, and a 1. The 2nd race was won by a Santana 21. Sunday the wind dropped to 12 - 15 so we hoisted the 155%. We could not shake off the Santana - we'd gain off the wind and then going to weather he'd be on our transom...we crossed the line first in both races but he corrected out over us - we had to give him 45 secs a mile! Talking to him at the trophy giving I found out that he was a 4-time Natl.Champion on that boat. But it sure was exciting racing! (See Frank - it does sometimes blow on Canyon Lake!)

When you do that well in a hard fought race against top tier competition, it almost doesn't matter who won, especially when you're sailing a heavy cruiser-racer that isn't supposed to be that fast. Good job!
45 seconds a mile??...................OMG!!! He had a 260-270 handicapp? I am not being critical Derek, BTW, I am just curious. 4 time national champ or not was his motor running? Where you PHRF JAM or Spin?
45 seconds is about right, Santana 21's aren't the speediest sportboats on the lake...
Congrats, sounds like a great win!!

Great job Derek, wish I could have been there that weekend, it had to be a blast. You don't have to tell me the wind blows on Canyon Lake, it seems to sneek up on me everytime I'm there under sail.
Well done! My sister and her husband are down visiting mom this weekend. Martha and I wish we were there to. Try to convince the regatta committee to hold the regatta over Thanksgiving weekend next year.
Sorry frank, the Regatta can't be moved. It's always held the first 2 weekends in November (the 1st weekend is for boardboats and dinghies) in association with the Wurstfest Celebration in the nearby town of New Braunfels - German sausage, beer and music (really an Octoberfest held in November!) You'll just have to come early for Thanksgiving!
