Someone foolishly gave me administrator privileges to the forum. With the intent of getting rid of the "Newbie" name for the new members I have arbitrarily modified category names and counts required to advance categories. My only hope of surviving such bravado is if a few of you notice the changes and say you approve, elst I am sure a higher power will reset everything back the way it was.
I never liked the Newbie thing. I looked at the list and like it.... Was there a lot of difference with the quantities, other than the first 10 it didn't look like it.
Above 5000 (I think Duane fudged my count a bit) the title should perhaps be "Blowhard" (except for Commodores, of course). Note that Bill Holcomb, one of our most sage members, is a mere Admiral, and Leon Sisson, another of our MVPs, is also far behind me. There might be a pattern there...
yeah....I noticed yesterday that i dropped in rank. I feel like I have been demoted and ...did not even get a fair trial or appeal. Shouldn't there be a grandfather clause for those that have been contributing postings up to now ? (don't take this comment seriously...just kidding)
While my postings have been diminshed for other reasons . . . (like an ample supply of answers in the archives to most of the questions raised each day), I long ago decided that when I approached 1000 postings I would change my ID (or better, swallow the website anchor). The notion that I am a "Master Marine Consultant" is absurd.
Dave's observation about Bill Holcomb is pretty astute. When I grow up, I want to be more like him.

I did it twice, since my posts go back to the first day of this forum and well beyond to our Trailersailor days when I was asking questions and deciding on a boat. It's embarrassing, but I can't help it.
Well, if we're going to consider the enlisted ranks there are more distinctions to be made. I was never a seaman, since I was a black shoe, I was a fireman. There are also airmen and corpsmen.
My dad was a corpsman in Korea, and retired as a LCDR after 26 years, my mom was a WAVE until she married my dad & had my older brother. He also joined the USN and also retired as a LCDR after 20 years.
My dad was an inveterate story teller, drove my mom crazy. The only two stories I ever heard from him about Korea were:
Dad, what did you do in the war? "I drilled holes in peoples' fingernails when they hit them with hammers."
And "Bedcheck Charlie" a North Korean pilot who would buzz the fleet once or twice a week just after taps (lights out), which would put the whole fleet at General Quarters (battle stations) for the duration of the night. He'd fly out, and cap off a couple hundred rounds of tracers staying well out of firing range of the anti aircraft guns. It was solely H&R fire to keep the entire fleet awake all night.
My guess is that the rest of what he witnessed during his time there was simply to harrowing to relate to his kids. He did enjoy watching M*A*S*H though, said it reminded him of a lot of his friends.
