up the Northwest Passage that is between Vancouver Is. British Columbia and the mainland. Winter is closing in here, got our first snow now, and Iam dreaming of going North this coming summer. I remember some advise from years past to not take an outboard past Campbell River.I have gone abit past Cambell River but to the East and not up the infamous Johnstone Straight or further yet the Queen Charlotte Straight. There are some mighty big currents in these areas and it gets tough to use a small outboard. Currents run 9 knts or better so its important to time ones passage to transit at or near slack water. Anyway if anyone has done it and has any thoughts about the subject it would be great to hear about it. How about it Sweetcraft? I know you are probably dreaming like I am about going North.

Yes Dave I keep the focus on the Northwest. Right now I am working on putting brakes on the second axle after all these years. Was just up there and it sure looked good around Anacortes. Went to visit my folks, Dad at 100 years and Rose soon to be 96, and got to talk about the sailing we have done. Talking of going up to the farther reaches of the Queen Charlottes which has been done with small outboards, 6hp, but I now have a 15hp. This could be better or could just get me into more trouble but it has been very nice in Dodd Narrows running a little late after slack after the flood tide. I am working on June as the start of the cruise this next summer and will be looking at the charts later this winter for some planning of where and how far to go. I'll be watching the Forum for ideas. What are you planning?

If I recall correctly, someone reported a 250 doing the passage from lower 48 to Alaska.

Having a bearing on such passages in tidal waters would be prop spin out.

Making a bit of comparison between the C250 and C25, an outboard on the 250 doesn't suffer spin out problems sometimes notable to the 25.

First, the motor well on the 250 doesn't extend the motor aft. Also, the 250 has a blunt entry compared to the finer entry of the 25. The 250 (at least the water ballast version) is not given to hobby horsing in a seaway that often causes prop breakout.

While not discounting fuel economy advantages of a diesel inboard for a long passage... an outboard equipped 250 should be at no disadvantage of control.

Well Jim we don't have any fixed plans as yet we just know we are going and can't wait. We will probably work our way to nanaimo, cross the Strait of Georgia,do the Sunshine Coast, and on up to Desolation Sound. After that who knows? Maybe we will try going up Johnstone to Queen Charlotte Strait. We will be travelling with our neighbors who have a 22ft C-Dory power boat. A sailboat and power boat is always a mismatch when you buddy boat but we are good friends so we hope it will work. We plan to be up North July&August. Hope we can see you somewhere up there.

If you want to miss Seymour Narrows, you might want to look at Blind Channel. There's a great little marina there with incredible food and the channel comes out into Johnstone Strait. There's also a very sheltered anchorage across the strait from Robson Bight (Boat Bay with a whale research hut there) and if you are there in August, you will often see mega pods of Orca, You can often hear them blowing and calling to each all night while you are at anchor. Further up towards Port Hardy in August, you may also see mega pods of Pacific White sided dolpins. It's a real treat. The local pod of Orca (about 15 whales), have a regular eating circuit. They leave Robson Bight about mid morning, eat their way to a point off Telegraph Cove, hang around for the kids to play, and at mid-day to 2:00pm, they make their way on a beeline back the 20+ miles to Robson Bight.

You must stay in Telegraph Cove on your way up. It has a good marina and pub with some good hikes (if you watch out for black bear and cougars!!) and kayaking.

It's a great trip with some wide open sailing north of Port Hardy, dotted by small islets, sometimes covered with Stella sea lions, as you make you way over to the mainland.

Ahhhhhh.....the memories

Thanks for the info. Sure makes it sound good and yes the great memories keep us coming back. Telegraph Cove is where I try to have my birthday and Dave has found us in Nanaimo before. Is the NHL restaurant still there? What is the better guide to use for planning a cruise and how do you check for fuel stops that are open?

I don't know that there is a NHL restaurant in Telegraph Cove. Are you thinking of another harbor?

Re: cruising guides, there are quite a few publications covering that whole area. I'll take a look through my library and post a message in a couple of days. I use the internet a lot, coupled with calls to marinas that we might want to visit.

Re: fuel, there is Lund on the Desolation Sound/North Sunshine coast, but beyond that, I went straight to Blind Channel. On the Campbell River side of Quadra Island you have Campbell River for sure. Beyond that up to Telegraph Cove, there's very little. after that, you have Port Mcneil, Alert Bay and Port Hardy all within a day's sail of Telegraph Cove.

Sorry I couldn't much more help. We sailed 90% of the way so fuel wasn't really a big factor.
