I was wondering if anyone is using a tension guage on their rig. I would be interested in the numbers they have setup for a standard rig for cruising.

After having years of troubles with my battery (I am on a mooring), I went ahead and purchased a solar panel. I highly recommend this product by Uni-Solar (http://ovonic.com/unitedsolar/flex.html). Not only will this panel trickle charge my battery (10W) but it is flexible (with grommets) to secure around the boom. I found a good deal at www.boatowners.com.

Mike, my 78 C25 has the updated, heavier rigging package sold by Catalina Direct. (open turnbuckles, etc.)....Contrare to the tech tips page on rig tuning, my boat seems to sail faster with the rig fairly tight. I checked it tonite with a Loos gauge. The lowers were about 45 on their scale, the uppers, 50. I haven't been out since re-tuning, but tight was fast last year. I loosened the rig for my race last weekend, i.e. the tech tips page. I found my boat slower than normal that way...(it's maybe just in my nature to be contrary) I hope this helps....Gary on Encore! #685

Loos makes 2 different sets of gauges. Which set are you using?

Gary- thanks for the feedback, let me know what gauge type you are using.

I am surprised to see that your lowers are the same tension (front & back). I was always under the assumption that the front lowers are tighter than the back lowers, Bill Holcomb's Tuning Guide says the same thing.

Do you have a slight rake in your mast?

I ordered the bigger loos gauge. When it came I put it on the lowers and found it to be too big for the scale. I sent it back and got the smaller one and when I went out I first put it on the upper and found it was too small and wouldn't fit on the wire. Go figure. So I just pulled them a little and compaired to other boats around me. I think they might be a little tight, forwards a little loose, think I will tighten them to get a little more mast bent for my old worn out sails.

Clarification on Loos gauges.

They make two sizes and they have two models.

The tension numbers on the Standard (or original) models do not match the numbers on the Professional models.

And as Matt discovered (with a little help from UPS,) the C-25 requires one of each size.
