I want to replace my manual bilge pump with a brand new one. It's mounted inside the sail locker with the handle being inserted through a cutout (with a nice plastic lid ensemble) around ankle high in the cockpit. You pump up and down while sitting on the port side bench. I think this is referred to as a bulkhead mount?
I also plan on installing new electric pumps, but want a rock solid heavy duty manual one as well. Any brands or other advice would be greatly appreciated!
The hose connected to my bilge pump has just the slightest curve at the end, but enough to not be flush with the bottom of the bilge, so I use a hand pump that I stick in a bucket to remove the 3 quarts or so that accumulate there over about 2 weeks time. Had considered installing an auto electric pump, but the boat didn't have one when I bought it. A very helpful salesperson at a marina wanted to know why I was going to install an auto, electric pump in a 20 year old boat that never had one before.
West generally has the kits, too. The usual failure is in the rubber bellows--often from water freezing in it. So, winterizing should include pouring some pink stuff in the bilge and pumping it out so some remains in the pump. I leave some in the bilge in case water finds its way down there.
There is a cutout with a rubber cover for you to put in the handle on the port side of the cockpit. You can see the pump if you lift up the cover of the locker.
