Hi All, I am getting ready to reseat my portlights and was looking at replacing them with the flat plexiglass mod. I'd like to talk to someone who has done it already just to understand what I am in for. Cheers.
Hi Dennis, There are two types of material. One is acrylic sheet, commonly known as Plexiglas and then there's polycarbonate sheet, which is better known as Lexan. There is a big difference. Polycarbonate sheet is very strong but it will craze in the sun. The acrylic will stay shiny longer but will scratch and crack easier. I spent hours and hours researching what stuff to use. You should use polycarbonate sheet for high impact surfaces, such as the sliding hatch or drop boards on an offshore boat. On our boats, for what you want to do, acrylic sheet would be the better material. The correct sealant is Sikaflex 295UV. But you can use whatever you want. Let us know how it turns out. If you want some polycarbonate sheet, I have some 1/4" for sale but it isn't a very dark tint.
Dennis, As Rick stated above he replaced his ports with the newer Lexan look. I would suggest that you take one port apart and see just what would be needed to replace the port. On the Capri25 we have an inside liner that spans the cabin area. there is a good 1/2" offset between the liner and the hull. I have not looked at the link Rick provided, but he bought his ports from a company that seals them.
I have a local shop that will cut the ports for me @ 65.00 per port. Then I would have to drill the necessary hole that would be needed to secure the port to the cabin top. The looks of the lexan glass is so much cleaner looking than the old style. I have taken all of the ports apart on the Capri 25, and it takes about 1 hour to remove the port, take it apart, clean the glass, remove all of the gunk on the aluminum frames, and re assemble them in the hole. Its a mess to remove 20+ year old crap smeared all of the glass and the aluminum frames, but after four hours of work I can now have a secure feeling that they aren't going to leak.
