The Avon inflatable we just bought came with one Weaver davit attached and one that had already come off. I don't have any use for the davit attachments so I took the other one off as well. I spent most of the afternoon trying to remove the glue with so-so results. The best tool seems to be a determined thumbnail and a blow dryer. I tried plastic scrapers, metal scrapers (rounded corners), scrubby pads, etc. with varying results, none too impressive. I'm guessing that it's some sort of two-part glue. The stuff from the one I just removed today is somewhat easier to remove, but the dried up stuff where the detached-when-I-got-it davit used to be is a brown, crusty mess, and very difficult to remove.

So now I've got two sore thumbs from scratching at this stuff and I'm thinking there must be a better way. Everything I read about the glue is in regards to applying it, not removing it. The articles all mention tolulene & MEK, neither of which sounds too good for the seams in the boat itself so I'm leery of using either. I tried some alcohol and Goo-Gone, neither of which did anything. Does anyone have some practical experience with doing this that they can share? I realize it's just cosmetic, but I'd like to get the old glue off my new inflatable.

I couldn't see any way practical to attach these to a 250, but they may well work for one of the 25 boats? If anyone's interested in the davits, let me know, the PO is supposed to be sending the big boat side of them to us, as well as a new two part glue kit, at which point I'll put these up for sale in the swap meet. I'd rather someone from the forum get them than some anonymous person on Craigslist.

The inflatable boat repair people I've dealt with use and recommend a can of MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) solvent for removing the glue, which I've had to do several times repairing my ancient Zodiac. You can get it at your local hardware store for about 1/3 the price the boat stores want for it. It's nasty stuff, you want to use it in a well ventilated area, but it does the job well. They recommend using it to clean and soften the surface prior to re-gluing as well. It dries very fast, much like acetone.

Thanks for the response.

I was hoping not to use MEK, I was occupationally exposed to it about twenty years ago and go out of my way to avoid it. I suppose I can use good gloves and breathing apparatus to do the work though. I've contacted Avon and asked them about it, they've been good about responding to my other questions so far.

Do you have to worry about the seams of the boat when you're using it?

Sorry to hear. Glad you made it through! That MEK is nasty! I'll only use it outside. I don't think unless you douse the boat the seams should be a problem- I usually just soak a rag and wipe, keeping it localized to the places I'm cleaning up. It looks like I'm going to have to re-glue the entire floor back on this old one. The repair shop says I'm crazy, I should just get rid of it, but now it's become a challenge to me to keep this old raft afloat!

I used MEK to remove paint from my Zodiac.
Local dealer also used it to remove excess glue when he glued on some pivot points for an athwarts seat.
He said to always use a rag and to never pour it on the Hypalon.
