Can anyone tell me what the distance from waterline to top of mast is for a C-25 tall rig?

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

The height above water to the top of the tall mast is 35'. (The mast alone is 30'.) The info is found by clicking on the Technical Tips link and then on opening screen, go down to the Catalina 25 & 250 Specifications article.

If you have anything sticking up above the mast, well then you will have to add that in as well. (ie. The anchor light, wind Indicator...or above that..VHF antenna.)

And if you're sailing under something that doesn't move, be sure to account for the sea state as well.

Waves, wakes and swells count when you're passing under a bridge.

The Mission Bay Drive bridge in San Diego was doable for us when the markings showed 37 feet or more.

At 37 feet the antennas make good curb feelers, and you do not want any wave or wake action.

Even with adequate clearance I always find it somewhat scary looking up as I pass under.

I had a recent experience that made the clearance/bridge issue somewhat a concern if not scary. I had sailed down the Potomac for about 3 hours having earlier gone under the Wilson Bridge that is undergoing replacement. One of the new spans is presently being used while they start demolishing the old bridge and then 2 years more to complete the addl new span which basically doubles the load carrying capacity on top and the new bridge provides about 5+ feet addl clearance underneath (approx 50+ feet compared to about ~45-46 feet for the old bridge). I went under the new bridge span under the section that has the highest clearance (the section that opens up...rarely) and is also where the old bridge section was already removed. But ...when I returned about 4 hours or more later, the tug boats must have had an active day because they completely closed off the bridge areas that had the highest clearance. I was forced to go at least 2 supports down from where I normally go under. At that point, the new span is still plenty high but the old bridge has not been demolished in that area and they did not put up temporary clearance signs which they usually do. It seemed that it would be close to the height of the mast and given that I had no real good alternatives, I cautiously went underneath. It was close....but it always seems worse than it probably was with probably 2 feet or so clearance.

That was 2 weeks ago. Yesterday, I sailed down close to the bridge and noticed addl section of the old bridge appeared removed and the highest clearance sections of the new span were again clear for boat traffic.
