How many here have practiced the emergency procedure of "steering by the sheets"?
It's amazing how much directional control you can have after practicing using only the sails to steer, which is a good trick in the event you lose your balanced or unbalanced rudder.

I did quite a bit of that last year just for fun. The first time I tried it, I could barely get the boat to move a degree or two in either direction......this went on for about an hour until I realized I had the tiller tied down. Once I let it loose, I had no problems. Cheers.
We lost our rudder just about 2 miles out of Road Harbor. It was a CSY43. had a couple frantic moments but got it in to a slip ok without damage. Once we got the hang of it, it went very well.
