Hi folks, hope everyone is enjoying the holiday spirit and sailing where weather and time allows.
I was appointed commodore of my condo assoc. yacht club tonight. The club sort of has fell by the wayside over the last 5 years and needs new spirit. I was hoping I could pick your brains and collect ideas for events, parties and so on that you participate in during the year. Any ideas are welcome and much appreciated!! We have about 100 plus members (hoping to up that if things improve) but need some new blood to awaken the group and any ideas that you want to share are welcome. Feel free to email me if you wish at Sailgal@comcast.net. I'd really appreciate any tips, suggestions so on about events that you enjoy during the year (other than races). Thanks and happy Holidays!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try www.Latitude38.com, scroll down to LINKS, then Yacht Clubs. Browse through them and you'll find all sorts of activities, and then you can make up some that reflect your own local "culture."

Racing on all levels for the sail racers
Cruises
Annual invitiational regattas
Parties for the kids (christmas, halloween, easter)
Learn to Sail programs for the Adults and Kids

You can check out our Calendar here

http://www.eycweb.com/

Click on Calendar

or check the "motor and mast" to get past issues of the club newsletter where you'll find many many previously held activities.

There are probably other clubs in the country that have similar websites to harvest some ideas.

'Congrats' Commodore Suzie, of course you could have an 'Invitational' event where you invite the trailer sailers from both sides of the handle. You are definitely within our 'trailing' range. From reading posts here, nothing gears up enthusiasm than holding a hosting event.

As a follow up to Paul's idea...you have so many excellent options for a weekender "Invitational"...The Tampa Bay area just to the north or just around the corner from you, Venice and then Cabbage Key (Cheeseburger in Paradise).

Host it and they will come...

Some of the things done here:
Mid-summer picnic with "garage sale"
"Fagawe" race (dusk to dawn - any ol' excuse for a race)
Media race (local media personalities guest crew on a boat, works with youth groups too!)
Commodore's Ball
July 4th Parade of Lights
Boat Drink Mix-off party/contest
Raft-ups (we schedule this to co-incide with large shore side events like hot air balloon rallies)
Pancake breakfasts
Open "house"
Chalk talks (racing, maintenance, etc)

I will start in January

Jan 1st - New years day raft up- Rum and hot coco

Feb 25 - Awards Banquet - Hosted by Activities Director

March 18 - Chili Cook off - Hosted by all fleets and awards for best Chili and table decorations

April 29 - Boat Show and Tell - We invite outside people to the club, we get about 5 people to take people out on their boats to build fleets, and the local dealer sets up a couple of boats for new sales, and we have about 5 to 8 used boats for sale, along with hardware, ect. Hosted at the club.

May 6 - Work Party - All members are required to come to the club to do general work that gets us ready for the new sailing season. Club supplies hot dogs and burgers at lunch. Its work but allot of fun. this also counts as a credit for part of the dues so we get 300+ members working together. Everyone is split into fleets.

May 13 - Moonlight sail - Just bring friends out to the club for a relaxing time, and this is set during full moon.

May 29 - Memorial Day Brunch (Catalina 22 Fleet)
• 12:00 pm : Memorial Day Long Distance Race RC Thistle

June 17 - Cheeseburgers in Paradise (Sunfish Fleet) burgers and hot dogs are cooked on the beach.

July 4 - July 4th Long Distance Race RC S20
• 6:00 pm : July 4th Celebration (MC Scow Fleet)

September 9 - Close MS Regatta, Sponsored by Outback Steak House - This is a regatta not to be missed, we get 40 to 60 boats on the start. Outback cooks chicken and Fillet,

October 7 - KISS-Keystone Intergalactic Stargazing Sail

October 14 - October-Fest (Santana 20 Fleet)Beer and Brauts

November 11 - Cajun Turkey Fry (KBRF / Cat 25/27 Fleet)This is another wonderful time at the club, Great food, and great people.

Dec - Christmas Party (Activities Director) This is another Major event at the club.

Everything is split into fleets so its not overwhelming to one person. We have an Activities Director over all of the fleets, and they take care of getting the needed supplies to the club or event. If you want to look at our full calendar to get a full idea of all the things going on at our club visit

Hey Don, has your area fully recovered from the blow 2 years back?
We stayed at a B&B near the marina on the north west side of the bridge, not heard from them since then.

Capri25... would you like to move over to this coast? Sounds like you guys really have fun.

Paul.

I forgot a few other parties...

The summer pool party (anybody who's been here know we don't have a pool -) they get 2 or 3 really large inflatible pools for older kids and sometimes rent a portable hot tub.

The gangster Martini Party
Underpriveledged sail camp

Cleveland Race Week is 10 days of party and racing

There is a Dock assignment day party where people who want new docks or to switch docks or have to switch docks or might want to switch docks choose new docks in an NFL draftesque fashion. They have it on an overhead screen with a neat automated system - this is coupled with the junior sailor used boat parts sale.

Kentucky Derby Party
Indy 500 party
We have a restaurant with Price specials on certain nights, don't know if that applies.

Occasionally there is a luau or a special band that comes and plays.

Remote controlled regattas

Lastly, we had a meet the neighbors party, where we invited anyone within a 4 mile radius, or any prospective new members to come down and enjoy horses ovaries and cocks tails and meet some of the members of the club.

You might even find some guys who don'tmind dropping the big hook and then a bunch of little ones with worms. Fishing Derby comes to mind

Hi Paul,

The area is doing very well...if you contact

http://www.regattapointemarina.com/

they should be able to provide information about the local B&Bs

Don't hesitate asking questions about the area.

Don
