It's time to buy a present for our 1995 c250 wb, Serendipity. The main sail cover has seen better days and needs to be replaced. I guess I'm leaning twards Catalina direct, but would appreciate any input from others that might have made a similar purchase. Thanks and happy holidays; Bill
We got ours with JD (2005WB) and if I had any idea about it's design I would have changed somethings.
The cover is too big for the sail! The girth of the cover leaves to much slack underneath. There are not enough of the twist locks along the bottom, I'll probably add at least 2 or 3 more (though if it were more snug around the boom and sail, then they would be ok. The method of holding the end of the cover to the boom end sucks! There has to be a better design.
Looks pretty when on. I'm going to make an end cap to cover the front end during trailing in order to keep the process of getting the boom ready to connect simpler.
I had a similar posting as yours around the end of the summer. One responder that actually has his boat in a nearby marina to me indicated he had bought his cover from CD and liked it. He told me what dock he was on and one day I took a look at it. It seemed fine. I decided to go for it. Right after I received my cover from CD, my origial cover completely failed. The zipper down the mast area broke and in trying to get it to work, the plastic zipper pieces came off. That was the end of that cover. I may cut it up and use it for a new tiller cover.
My new mainsail cover is well made. It is better than the original cover and is the right length. No guess work on this one. I just ordered what they list for the C-25 and it fits very well. The big diofferences compared to the original are that it has the twist snaps down the mast in place of the plastic zipper. At first, I thought that I would not be happy with the twist snaps up front but the twist snaps work great. There are more twist snaps under the boom than the original and the new cover also has each twist snap with reinforced material in the cover cloth. So it should hold up pretty good. The new cover also has a small piece of leather reinforcement under the boom area close to the mast and also around the back end of the boom. They probably put it in those locations due to wear experienced there.
There are other sources for covers and some that are less expensive. But the CD cover works fine for me and I would recommend it as a good replacement.
Only thing I was thinking about was my cover was for a 1989 catalina 25. Not sure if the boom is same size for the catalina 250. if it is not and they use a standard size cover for both booms, then that may explain the other responder that indicated it was too big, etc. i would check the CD website for the cover part number on both the 25 and the 250 to see if it is the same and then check the spec section of the Association (Tech Tips main page) to see if the booms are of different length.
I recently added the Doyle Stack-Pack System to our main, so we have an almost brand new C 250 cover available. It's from a 2004 250WK and is royal navy with the 250 emblem on it. Let me know.
