I purchased my first boat this summer, a Catalina 25. While sailing on various points of sail, up wind, my keel appears to make a loud vibrating noise. This vibrating noise can be somewhat corrected by raising or lowering the keel a couple of inches (a real pain in the butt). Is this sound normal or is one of the components in my swing mechanism loose?
Dime on a dollar it's the typical vibration of the keel cable noise. Most of us just use it as an audible knotmeter... If she's humming, so are you. If you don't like it, loosen the cable to the point of having a little(not too much now) slack in it. It won't vibrate in that state.
As Bruce said, the hum is normal for swing keeled boats. My old swinger did the same thing and I just took a wee bit of tension off the cable to make it go away. Some people don't mind the hum. For me, it drove me crazy.

When my keel is all the way down I have found that it starts humming at just about 3.5 knots. I don't know if this impromtu speedometer is affected by other conditions but I like because it lets me know when we are starting to "hum" along.
