I have a 1997 tall rig Catalina 250 with a Garhauer boom vang and I keep bending the bracket that attaches to the boom vang on the boom side of the vang. After looking at it, the boom is on a swivel and when dropping the main sail it flops on the side of the boom as it falls onto the deck and causes the bracket to bend.
I know that others on the Catalina 250 have Garhauer Rigid Boom Vangs, has anyone run into this problem before?? if so how do I correct it.
I have checked with Catalina teck support, and Garhauer an neither could suggest a fix. The support person at Catalina says even on the new 250's the boom can spin. Any suggestions
The folks who make the boom kicker have a device that attaches to the mast and the boom neck and stops the boom from rotating. It is a seperate piece from the the boom kicker but comes in the C250 kit. I think it does exactly what you want. It is called a "K0750 Roll Stop Fitting."
I don't buy Garhauer equipment if I can help it, I find much of it bends. I have no knowledge about metallurgy but the difference between Schaefer stainless parts and Garhauer Stainless parts is night and day. I think their blocks are ok unless they are where you might step on them.
I've had a Garhauer rigid vang on my C25 for three years, have sailed through some nasty weather, and have not had a problem with it. I bought it on the recommendation of a friend who sails a 30 ft. C&C Redwing who has had a Garhauer rigid vang for five years without a problem.

The vang makes a long lever arm against that bracket. Sounds like Nautiduck's fitting is the answer.
If I'm visualizing your description properly, and you have the vang version that accomodates the pop top, the swivel you mention should be at the mast base, not attached to the boom.

I had that on a boat that was designed for roller reefing of the main around the boom by rotating the boom. Picture the vang going up to a bracket on the boom... When the boom swivels slightly, the bracket (unless it has a swivel base) will bend. I don't see the point of a rotating boom on a C-250, so the Boomkicker attachment is probably the solution. Somebody might want to tell Garhauer about it--they should probably make a knockoff.
I don't believe I've ever used the garhauer, but have used a forespar or a harken or some other model.
I'd recommend getting the fixed gooseneck kit from Catalina Direct for starters. that should alleviate your spin problem.
If you are attaching to a bail, then you should really have something different. The only rigid I've used has been on larger boats where the fitting on the boom end is either welded or riveted and has a very snug fit with a clevis pin to the actual device.

Ron said it's attached to a bracket on the boom, and the bracket bent--for a good reason.
Great responses, thank you. I checked with Boomkicker and recieved a response with a great solution.
Hi Ron,
Thanks for the email. We do make a roll stop fitting, a drawing is attached to show how it looks. You can also go to our site and under pictures, see the C250, which has it. It fits in the luff groove of the mast to avoid drilling, and has two straps which reach up to the boom and hold it upright. It should not have any trouble allowing full movement of the boom
Well that was it I am going to order the roll stop fitting from Boomkicker.
By the way I have no complaints with the Garhauer Rigid Boom Vang. It is definetly the rotating boom that is the problem and when I explained it to Garhauer they had never heard of this problem the the Catalina 250 before, Garhauer did offer to replace the bent bracket at no cost to me, which I will follow up on.
Thank you for all of your responses, another problem taken care of whith the forum, and great communications. A personal thanks to Randy & Pat Kolb..
Ron, I think you will also find that the roller stop attaches to the boom using two screws that are already in the boom so no need to drill at all. Have fun.
