I went down to the boat today for lunch to check things out after the storm. Its gusting 35 knots and higher. The waves are > 13 feet, short period and breaking all the way across the Mission Bay channel. The whole of MB is whitecaps, with a large 5 to 6 foot swell running all the way into Quivira basin. I hear it's gusting 45 knots under Pt. Loma. It's 1 to 2 and all white caps even at the dock.

All our boats are riding fine. Henk has a portable wind meter and it's only reading about 20 on L dock. His little machine read a gust in the 70s out on the end of the jetty. It was hard to walk against the wind and I could barely breathe.

I was out single handed Friday in BIG winds (not this big). Double reefed main, 110 jib and still rounding up. 9 foot seas at 4 seconds (MB Lifeguard boat suggested I stayed in the bay - I did). Considered my 60% jib but I could just handle the boat double reefed.

I was out 3 days last week, one nice long sail with Henk. I made it out last night in very calm air, flat seas, but there was about a 10 foot swell running - super long period, very regular, and very steep over the MB bar (I was afraid it would break!) Didn't want to come in after dark with that big swell.

Happy New Year from San Diego.

By the way - We'll be in the New Years Day race again, photos to come.

Check out our entry at:
http://www.sdyc.org/
Skipper name: G.Norgan
Boat name: Mary A
Watch this site for coverage later and check out the number of really fast boats (and real expen$ive, too), and big boats.
We'll be sure to post some pics after.
We sailed on my C25 last year but decided to enlist my friend's 1983 C30 because it is slipped about 10 minutes motoring time from the start AND finish lines in San Diego Bay.
Wish us luck.
