I have read in the past that there is ceremony required for renaming a boat, somehow involving red wine, and an offering to Neptune or something. The previous name has was removed from my 25 when I bought it, but before I affix the new name, I thought I would ask if anyone knows the ritual.
I've read that the alternative to champagne is to have a virgin pee on the bow of the boat. It wasn't clear what gender the virgin was supposed to be, though.
Just so you know that it's all in fun....I have never bothered with ceremony and I've re-named a number of boats! They're all still floating! Ceremony might be fun, but it's not "required"....I think the idea got going in the DARK AGES! But, if you do it, have fun with it..Gary on Encore! #685. (This boat has had 4 names, at least. I've bought her twice (hence current name) and given her two of them myself..)
I pay little attention to such carryings on and recommend that others consider the same approach to renaming. Nothing much happened when last I renamed my current boat blaming the two sinkings on the ineptness of the designers and builders of the Catalina 25. What else can a rational sailor think.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>. Besides the awkwardness of asking a person of either gender if they are virgins( what proof is required)not to mention that they then pee on your boat. Multiple sinkings are a small price to pay to avoid such embarrassments, or so it seems to me!!!!
