I have read all of the post relating to batteries, 2nd battery and battery charging that I could find. There are many very good ideas that will work for me but there is one thing I have not seen mentined and maybe it is not that much of a problem. That is the safety issue, first the issue of possible explosion and second the gasses produced by a charging battery. Maybe the use of a small (3 to 5 amp) charger doesn't cause as much risk. Anyway I was wondering if others have some thoughts on this? This site has Cautions and Charging Tips. [http://www.uuhome.de/william.darden/carfaq9.htm#cautions]

OK, this is by no means an expert opinion, but I'll offer my 2-cents worth: I believe at reasonable charging rates, you won't produce enough gass to cause concern. I use a 10-amp, dual-bank 3-stage Xantrex charger for two Group 29 lead-acid batteries under the V-berth. I have not had any problems with that arrangement. If you're looking at gel cell or AGM batteries, it's not even an issue.
I recommend getting a good quality solid-state battery charger - one that monitors how well the battery is accepting the charge. It will bring you peace of mind if your battery charging will be unattended.
