I have a 81 C25 that I want to pull out for some bottom maintanence. I am trying to decide is it ok to mount a trailer eye in the little storage at the end of the v berth?I noticed some of the C25 at my marina look a few inches lower. but it looks difficult to get at under the v berth storage . has anyone ran into this situation? thanks ...Don

Don, it sounds as though you are saying that the boat never had a Trailer eye? Can't believe that it got thru the works without one.
Crawl up into the Vee berth and open that little access cover up forward and see if there isn't a little block of wood stuck right into the bow Vee. That is where the Trailer eye should be mounted - the block is the backing for it. Catalina Direct sells a replacement for the wooden block in fiberglass, I believe. They also have the trailer bow eyes in stock.

Don,
My understanding is that Catalina sold some 25's with the bow eye in the compartment that you mentioned, and some without an eye. My (semi-custom) trailer winch is too low to use the compartment area, so I had to install my bow eye in the area under the v-berth.

The block from Catalina Direct is made to fit in the little storage area. It didn't work for me when I installed the eye underneath as the hull v-angle is shallower down there.

I would recommend installing it in the storage box if possible as getting at it at very far forward part of the bilge was very uncomfortable. One thing I learned from it was that 3M 5200 is some strong stuff. My amateur installation has not budged, leaked, or shown any signs of weakness.

My bow eye came installed with access through the little storage area and it was small eye installed through a block of wood that crushed from the pressure of pulling the boat onto the roller trailer. This was before Catalina Direct so I made an oak piece to fit the inside of the hull and used fibreglass putty to secure it. The small eye was replaced with a 1/2 inch U bolt and a SS plate with 3M5200. The larger eye is easier to hook on to for loading but harder to use from the boat. I also wanted the best backed fitting at the very best place if the boat needed a pull from a power boat, just in case.

The bow compartment is the place to put the eye, you are dealing with a hull liner in that location. My original eye had wallowed out the holes a bit so when I repaired it I set washers and nuts through the liner against the hull and then followed with the backing block against the liner. I had some teak cleat risers that I used instead of using the CD block.

Thank you all for your response. Yes I have bought a backing block from catilina direct. The new one is made of plastic. I will mount it thru the storage area. under the V berth looks a little tight to get in thier..lol. thanks again....Don...
