We are gradually reducing the 'please move out the way so I can get to that stowage' issue aboard JD. We currently keep all 'cold' food in our 5 day cooler under the galley stove, all 'cool' food and water, beer, wine, in the cold locker (our stbd side cabin locker mod) and all the 'dry' food (coffee, condiments, cereal, etc.) in the port side cabin locker. So when preparing a meal I have to access all three areas plus the pot-n-pans crate that sits on the matress of the aft-berth.

Playing around with the idea of adding galley handy stowage (pot-n-pans, dry stuff, etc.) thus eliminating the need to access the port side locker for food stuff.

My first idea was to build an open shelf set that is aft of the Galley stbd side under the power panel. It could be held in place by velcro (really don't want to put holes in the inner hull liner) and extend from the mattress up to the galley counter top. I would remove the existing aft fiddle from the galley top and relocate it on the aft edge of the new shelf set, make a matching fiddle for the inboard edge of the shelf set. (Have made some sketches, will have to scan them in and post)

Anyone done anything like this?

Paul

Paul,
I keep my pots pans and lots of dry food in the cabinet under the sink. The cabinet has 2 wire shelfs for storage, plus the galley trash can is in there as well.

Adding to what Tom said... we keep the condiments in a plastic tray screwed to the back of the galley cabinet door. I think it was a stackable pantry bin for potatoes and onions and had a lip on the top that made for easy fastening to the back of the door.

A lot of storage is obtained by hanging two plastic baskets from hooks made to hook on the liner lip to the right of the galley cabinet. Believe it or not the baskets stay put even during rough conditions.

The first one is very easy to reach into but the second requires a knee inside the aft berth to forage for anything deep within the basket... no problem.

Arlyn, I have been on a quest to find those types of baskets ever since you first posted them. Target, Wallymart, Lowes, Home Depot, WallGreens, and any other store I visit... have spent hours now searching for them.

We use the undersink galley locker for trash, clean up gear, mosquito spray, cream, wipes (I have a real issue with Mossies) and it seems like a ton of other stuff. Getting to it is suprisingly awkward. Also keep the spare gas canisters in there. No food stuff in there at all. Currently we have a large plastic bin for the pots, pans, cups, plates, etc. (cutlery, utensils, cork screw, lighter etc. are in my new Cutlery tray which works so sweet!)

Remember, we go out for a minimum of 3 nights each trip, normally 4 or 5 nights, so we probably carry more provisions than most. Hence the idea of a storage unit.

Little things like Arlyn's paper towel holder make a huge difference.

Paul have you give any thought to using storage hammocks? I've been thinking of getting myself one to mount in the rear berth area for food storage on those longer trips.

Tom, 'yep' but I think it would involve crawling around back there to access them.
You have to picture me sitting on the extended galley seat(on the middle step). I can imagine myself just leaning back there to retrieve/replace something. I intend to make one out of cardboard boxes first to see how it pans out (pun intended!)

Plastic - fits the bill! (3*$7.00)

Found these at Lowes, they are individual drawers that stackup, I screwed them together with 4 screws each (top and middle units).

They fit great effectively extending the countertop for 'cool' stuff. I didn't have to harm the berth mattress at all, the unit barely touches it.

You cannot see them in the pics (need a close up) but I used 3 plastic car door panel snap in clips to act as restrictors to reduce the risk of them opening when we heel (like they are going to when the heel limit is about 7degs.

They are secured to the galley side using the screws that originally held the aft countertop fiddle teak plus a pair of screws into the side panel from the inside of the empty drawer unit.

There's room behind them for 'stuff' and they rest on the lip that runs along the side of the aft berth.

Sea Trial Report:

Excellent!!!
What a difference it makes having everything handy at the galley area.
Reducing food & drink storage to the stbd cabin locker cooler and the galley cooler and now adding the storage in the new 3 drawer unit - way cool! We're getting there.
Add this to the galley cutlery draw and this mod becomes one of those 'Wow, glad I did that' things. The unit stored all the pots and pans, all condiments, cups glasses, cereal, dry snacks, and loads more. It made food prep some much more of a pleasure.

(see my other post about the galley cupboard light.)

Paul.

The plastic drawers provide plenty of storage. I installed a 3 drawer system on the Port side of the aft berth last year to store clothing when we were out for extended trips.
