OK, dumb question number 987. Where do the wires from the motor enter the battery compartment. The only openings I see are the vent from the fuel locker. Do they go through that and then through the piece of conduit from the locker to below? That seems strange to me given that the vent is there for gas vapors and I'm pretty sure gas vapors and electricity is not a good combination.

On our 250 WB #841, the cable from the outboard enters the hull in the indent of the stbd side round down. Sadly the guy that did the install made a bad job of it, he just drilled the hole and fed the cables in, then used some kind of caulking to seal the hole. Pro is no plug and socket, con is no plug and socket!
Check the picture I posted on Solar Panel Mount. Both the solar panel wire and the engine cable are inserted through a hole with a cowling, lower center of the picture.
Definitely a "through the deck" connector. I hate drilling holes in my boat without something solid to fill them. Also makes for an easy way to remove the outboard for the winter.
the small clam cover blocks the hole from the weather on my boat, I had to add a spacer behind it to fit all the wires . The wires to the right are the motor the one on the left is gps and other stuff. the next size bigger clam cover is alot bigger
I guess it's time for me to drill my very first hole in the boat. Just the sound of that doesn't seem right somehow. I wonder why this wasn't a part of the manufacturing of the boat? How many 250's are out there sailing without an electric start/battery recharging motor? I'd venture to say VERY few. I would imagine that most of them were sold that way by Catalina. Hmmmm....
Sean, is the Stainless Steel lid your shore power connection?
John, that little hole is nothing. I just drilled a 4 3/4" hole in the cabin roof for a solar vent. YOu don't know fear until you find yourself holding a power drill with a 4 3/4" hole saw attachment while sitting on the boat!
