What folks found to be the best outboard power setup for the C-250K (winged keel). The sailing group I belong to has two new C-250K's, we put Merc 9.9 long-shafts from previous boats on the 250's, and between the narrow confines of the well which prevents steering with the motor's tiller, and what appears to be excessive cavaitation because the long-shaft is not long enough, the boats are basically uncontrollable backing out of a slip with quartering wind.
The c250 is very light...and sports considerable freeboard...so is a challenge to deal with in a cross wind. To overcome, the motor has to have rotation. If your boats will be powered or power sailed at times, then a four stroke makes the best choice. If the motor is used as a kicker to and from the slip...then a smaller two stroke with more turning room would be a good choice.
Either way, ya gotta go to an xtra long shaft. An 8 hp is all you need. When I commissioned my boat back in Jan of '96, I knew the first mod would be to link the tiller and motor. I developed the soft link to accomplish that and it works fine.
The motor well is tight, but by shifting... many of the motors carefully, such as the new Honda's, they will rotate freely for a port turn and 20 deg for a starboard turn... this gets the job done fairly well.
I have a 250wk and I have the Honda "High Thrust" 8hp with the Xtra Long Shaft and have no problems with it cavitating or coming out of the water. I also have the "Fixed" Outboard Bracket that was an option on the boat when I ordered it. With this I can turn the motor in either direction if needed.
I'd like more feedback on this. I'm trying to buy a new c 250 and seeing alot of them sporting 2 and 4 stroke merc 9.9's. It seems to me the general answer is the "best" motor is a Honda 8 with and extra long shaft. Am I close or have I lost it?
I have the Honda 8 on my boat, and use Arlyn's softlink, and have had no trouble, but I think that outboard bracket would be really nice for docking in strong wind or current.
I have an older 250..hull #5. It had a honda long shaft, 8 hp Honda when I bought it. Wave Height in Columbia R. caused serious cavitation problems so I replaced it in 2000 with a Honda 9.9, extra long shaft and the problems ended. It is a tight fit, but turns about as described above. It is terrific unless I have to lift it by by hand. While it can be done, having a herd of friends to help is sure nice. Heavy really doesn't do it justice.
