I am looking for somone who carries marine speaker grills/covers. The speakers in our cockpit have the original covers with them. They work well except for one issue. When you try to open the fuel locker on the port or storage locker on the starboard, they will not fully open. The top of the lockers hit the speaker covers long before the locker is open.

Does anyone know where I can buy just speaker covers? Preferably ones that are marine rated. I am looking for a cover that is more flush with the surface so the tops of the two lockers can open fully.

In my opinion 75% of the earth is water for a reason. That's why I sail.

Mike, I don't think that the cover for the speaker is waterproof, or anything different than a normal cover, I think the speaker itself is coated with a water resistant material. I don't know for sure, but I would check with a local car installation place, like Car Toys, I know most of the time they just throw away the covers and use the cars grills to keep that Stock look.

What size speakers are they?

I think they are 8", but will have to measure. Since they are just covers, I will look at car toys as suggested. Maybe I can pick up a pair for next to nothing.

8" are huge for that area. I went with 5.25" PolyPlanar with powder coated aluminum grills and they still were a bit of an issue.

Frank, you're probably right. I am guessing really. I will measure next time at the lake. I just want the top to open enough to not have to hold it all the time. Especially on the fuel locker side. It makes taking out the fuel tank a pain.

A little bungee could solve that.

True, but I would like to have something thinner. The reason is that when you raise the lid and put any kind of pressure on it, it is pulling on the lid's hinges. I am sure the extra pressure is not good for them. I will probably use a bungee until I find a grill that is suitable.

I'm glad I read this. I didn't think about the grills preventing the hatches from opening all the way. I haven't decided whether I'm going to install speakers in the cockpit yet (still need to buy/install stereo!), but those were locations I had in mind. If I decide to install some, I'll also keep an eye out on some that are more flush. Thanks for the tips.

Justin,

When scouting out speaker locations, keep in mind where people sit so the speaker doesn't end up behind someone's seat cushion. Frank's seatback speaker location wouldn't work well on my boat because it would be covered up by the ever present cockpit seat cushion and Sport-a-Seat.

One of the best speaker setups that I have seen had the speakers hanging under the catbird seats on a C250. Under cover and aimed right at the cockpit.

Sorry, Mike. I replaced some ratty old PolyPlaner speakers that were already in that location. So, it was a compromise. Huge sound won out over slim design. You know how much I like my tunes. I mean, come one, now I have Bose speakers hanging from my catbird bench and you can't even hear your speakers when I'm around. ;-)

Take a look at all the boat shows... the hot item is a stainless steel arch with a pair of big speakers aimed at the cockpit and the wakeboarder behind the boat. Hunter is ahead of the curve!

seatrac - Now that you have moved all the way to the end, we need some tunes to listen to. This not a really big deal, but you know how we always are adding projects to the list. Until our house is built, we have to keep our big projects on hold. Things like the new main sail, and bottom job will have to wait a while.
