I am ready to install an Edson pedestal guard but have not a clue as to how to remove the upper part of the steering pedestal. I have a Ritchie compass mounted on the pedestal. I looked over the setup but didn't see any obvious screws or anything that would indicate how to remove the compass so that I can mount the pedestal guard including the bracket that goes around the pedestal. So, how do I do it??
We cannot direct the winds but we can adjust our sails.
Randy, I removed my compass today. The top of the compass has 2 groups of screws. There are 3 screws with slightly larger heads and in a slightly wider circle. There are about 8 smaller screws in the inner circle. Remove the 3 outside screws to remove the compass. Note: the inner screws are for the compass lense, if you loosen them the oil will leak.
Once the compass is removed, there are 4 screws that hold the compass mount. The compass mount has adjusting holes for the compass. The holes are starboard and aft. Remove the compass mount and put the pedestal guard under it.
I have been considering adding a wheel guard as well. Could you document what you do via pictures and add to this thread? I am concerned about which guard to purchase and where / how to place holes for mounting. Additionally I am interested in what (if anything) the guard does to usable space in the cockpit; does it enhance as expected or does it 'get in the way'
Will do Don. I am doing the pedestal install this weekend so I'll take pictures as I go. I have the 54" straight guard from Edson and also bought the 4 cup holder, an Edson instrument platform and a cockpit table. A goal for me is to improve the functionality of the cockpit area, both for sailing and living. We also got a gas grill to hang off the stern rail and I'm looking forward to grilling food and enjoying a meal at our cockpit table. By the way, the Edson site (www.edsonmarine) has a tech section that includes a full-size template for placing the holes. If you go with the 54" straight guard I found an online site that beat everyone else by over $100.
