Solar trickle charging panels come with a "CLA adapter". What exactly is that? Thanks.

But as I responded on the General Forum posting, of what use are they when my panel is connected to the battery with alligator clips?

Basically none if you use the alligator clips. The CLA is there so you can connect the panel to the battery temporarily via a CLA adaptor if you have one.

Also - a lot of these panel are often designed for both boat and car use so they have a CLA so you can trickle charge the car battery easily from within the car.
