RECENTLY MY GOOSE NECK BROKE AND I RECEIVED A NEW VERSION FROM CAT DIRECT. MY OLD GOOSE NECK SLID UP AND DOWN THE MAST IN THE SLOT. THE NEW ON IS DESIGNED TO BE FASTENED TO THE MAST. HAS ANYONE MADE THE CONVERSION AND IF SO HOW DID YOU FASTEN IT TO THE MAST, AND HOW DID IT COMPARE.
I'm surprised that the listees haven t been all over you with responses to your query...must be great sailing all around. I started to reply to your "Q" but got tangled all up in my own verbage...NOT a good sign...so take that into consideration as you look for wisdom in my reply. I would never have a boat with a fixed gooseneck...from my perspective it is too important a device in sail shape and control to settle for a fixed boom. Some may say that the halyard and cunningham will handle the job and they are right, but at the same time you are limiting your flexibility in sail control by a factor of 1/3. When the main is raised to the top(or your top) the boom is then hauled down till the leading edge of the sail(luff)is as desired, I prefer a sails luff taut to windward and in heavy air and slack downwind or in light air. Picture if you will doing the same with a fixed boom...haul the sail taut with the halyard and then if the luff is sagging your only option in straightening the luff is to use the cunningham. Members that are into class racing and wanting to control sail size may want to join in here since we're running out of controls to do so.
I'm thinking I should reset here and would do so but since no one else has joined in I'm leaving it as is.
How the heck would you be able to raise the pop-top with a fixed goose neck and what would you do if you installed a bimini? Either way, seems to me the only solution is NOT to have a fixed goose neck - yukkkk! ;)
If it were me, I'd call Cat. Direct and ask 'em if they meant to send me a fixed gooseneck and why the sliding version isn't available. If that didn't get me an original replacement, I'd rebuild the broken one.
