I have a Honda 9.9 XLS. the manual describes a clip or friction bolt to keep the motor from turning on it's shaft, but I don't have one. I have been using the small metal (not rust resistant) clip that keeps the motor from rotating during shipment, and would like something better. Does anyone have a similar outboard motor with a friction bolt?

If you have the newer version with the rounded cowl, the steering friction control is a flat bar on the front--just below the cowl and above the clamps. It slides right-to-left to control the friction. The older models have a bolt on the side of the shaft behind the mounting board. Is there a hole there with no bolt? I believe the bolt comes with a spring--a dealer should be able to get you a proper replacement.

Thanks. I do have the new model, but no control bar. Can you post a photo?

It's pictured on page 15 of a manual on Honda's site:

If yours is the remote steering model (for use with a wheel), it might not have that. Otherwise it should.

I have a 2006 Honda 9.9. Dave's description of the flat bar in the front of the motor is same as what I have on my motor. It's just to the left of where the twist grip handle attaches to the motor.

I have the remote control model-no tiller. I wonder if that makes a difference?

I suspect so... You wouldn't want friction at the engine working against the steering linkage. It might be time to rig "Arlyn's Soft Link." (See the Tech Tips.)
