I would like to add coaming winches to my wb250. For those who have done this, did you put some sort of backing plate for extra support? What size winch?
Jeff, My WK came with 16ST lewmars. I took the 16's off the cabin top and moved them to the coamings. I bought two 6 lewmars and put those on the cabin top where the 16ST's were. I used large SS fender washers on the bolts for backing. The fender washers I used were a little bigger than the washers that Catalina used on the cabin top winches, I feel that was adequate.
I kept the Lewmar 14ST on the cabin top and added a new 14ST winch to each coaming. A little expensive, but I think the self tailers are well worth the cost.
I used the bolt size recommended by Lewmar (#10 I think) and large fender washers. I have a 135% Genoa, which must place a heavy load on the winches, but I have had no problems to date.
Remenber to use epoxy in the holes you drill; I also used 4200 sealant under the winch base plates.
