When I bought Kaija, she came with an Idasailor kick-up rudder. Since she's a wing keel, I'm not sure I see the point once the boat is off the trailer. With that in mind, is there a problem securing the rudder in the lowered position thereby disabling the "kick-up" feature

I have the Ida rudder on my 250 WB, and of course the kick up feature of this rudder makes sense for my boat.
If I were you, I would maintain the potential safety feature of the kick up rudder by securing it in the down position with a delrin 'shear pin' (Ida supplied several with my rudder.) This will keep the rudder down when sailing, but fail if the rudder strikes an object, so that the rudder and boat transom are protected. The pin is threaded and held in place with a stainless nut, so it is easy to remove, even from aboard the boat.
John, Do you have a pic of the sheer pin set-up? I used my own tiller for the IDA kick-up and while I love it's performance, sometimes keeping the rudder all the way down has been a challenge. I am currently using a cam cleat I mounted on top of the tiller bracket and it chews through line at a pretty good pace. Willy
