Hi folks, I don't remember this from last year, which doesn't mean much because I have a hard time remembering what happened 15 minutes ago, but I had my first sail of the year (a race!) yesterday and the lowers are much looser than they were before the race. Is this normal? The boat was stored over the winter with the mast down, in case that sheds any light on the subject.
Hi Ben, Sounds like you didn't get the mast tuned completely when you raised it this spring. Here's a link to a mast tuning article that I wrote for the Mainsheet magazine several years ago. You can find it and other neat stuff in the tech tips section of the website.
"lowers are much looser than they were before the race."
Wouldn't worry too much... just for kicks, you might inspect the deck around the attachments and make sure nothing is pulling up. If you re-adjust they should stay pretty much in tune the second time around. Remember that you want the aft lowers want to be a bit looser than the front so you can adjust mast bend.
Are your turnbuckles pinned or wired so they can't turn? I tend to agree that when the boat has "settled" over the winter, the position of the lower chainplates might become a little lower, and the tension from your first sail of the season might pull them up a little.
Most of the time they tell you not to permanently pin and tape anything until you've sailed her for a week. If it was blowing good enough it is possible that the rig loosened up a bit. I'd crank them back down and keep an eye on them. Make sure you ring them or pin them.
