After couple of times with my first mate, Traveler, I have realized that he is a definate sea-legged companion with the exception of one thing, where does he go poop! Anybody have any ideas of doggie potties on the boat!
I've heard it is possible to train your dog to poop on a piece of artificial grass on the foredeck. I tried with Merlyn and she just wouldn't "do it." So, when traveling with the dog - I always tow a dinghy and when required I drop a hook and go ashore...
"Train your dog to crap in a Ziploc bag that you are holding"
Can we get some photos or video of those training sessions?
You could try some trainig pads (wee pads or puppy pads, sold under various names) kind of like a large flat diaper. They are scented for the dog to encourage them to relieve themselves on it.
I've tried everything with my Golden "Sugar" and ended up buying a dinghy as well. Also having to deal with getting a 60 pound dog on and off the boat. So far the ladder at 90 degrees w/flotation under and something nonskid on top seem the best idea. Still experimenting though! Oh, and Frank, cat's are great, dogs are better, nothing good is easy:) haha, just got a mental image of a cat hanging in the cockpit with you in 5 ft. seas .........
Same with the Chief Petty Officer on Dogs Allowed. We trained him (by putting tiny amounts of crap) to us the back of the cockpit, then we flush with water. We got the original idea from a cruiser who did the same thing on the foredeck of a larger boat.
He never needed it until I started living on the boat for a few months. Then the training was easy. Let him out in the morning to find the strategically placed crap, and the idea was implanted in his head.
I will get my punishement when he does it during a race someday... ;-)
