Up here in the Northeast I'm still 45 days from launch but reading all the work everyone's doing is inspiring me. This year I need to paint her bottom with anti-fouling. It's been a few years (like 25) since I painted a bottom so I'm operating a little blind here.

Menehune's bottom was painted by the dealer when she was first splashed and she now needs a new coat. Any advice on re-applying? Do I need to sand all the remaining paint off before painting and, if so, do I need to prime it before applying a good anti-fouling paint? Any recommendations on the paint? She splits her time between Marblehead and Salem Harbors (Massachusetts) so the growth and slime can be pretty aggressive during our short four month season.

Thanks

Bob

Bob, I have been sailing all year; what do you do all winter?

I just put Victory2 back in the water last week, after a week of bottom paint. I followed the West Marines salesman's advice and went with the West Marine CCP Plus. This paint required sanding and I wish that I had gone with something that did not. At the time I thought what is a little sanding, and I can save a $100. Sanding ablative paint is a mess, not to mention the Hazardous Materials issues.

The painting is easy! I followed the directions to a "T". When launching a thin layer of paint stuck to the forward bunks, and ripped the bunk carpet. Has any one else experienced this? The boat still has protections, but I was surprised. I plan on taking the issue up with the WM store shortly. Time will only tell on the performance of the the remaining paint.

There was a thread on bottom paint active last week that I sure can be found in the archives, and I think one active on the 25's or open forum. Dave gave some great advice that is worth the research.

I have a WK and painted it right on the trailer. You can remove the WK guides to expose the keel. I used screw jacks to lift the boat off the bunks. It is an easy one person job minus the sanding.

No sailing today, I am off to the Strictly Sail Show in Oakland.

Numerous threads on this, mostly on the General forum--you can use the Search function. My short answer is find out what the dealer used. If it's an ablative (CPP Plus, Micron, or Bottomkote ACT, etc.), use the same thing. No sanding required or recommended. If it's a "hard" paint (Fiberglass Bottomkote--not ACT), strip it off chemically (don't do it with a sander) and start over with an ablative--and tell your dealer to straighten up his act.

Much more information (and opinions) here in the other treads...
