I replaced my keel cable a couple of season's ago. Is there any thing specific to check for before I put the boat in for the season? The cable doesn't show any loose strands and the pin looks fine.
Is the pin you're talking about the pin at the turning ball or the pin that secures the cable to the keel?
I take it you've inspected the cable around the swage (where cable the eye is formed) and the keel fitting? That seems to be the most common point of failure.
The cable should be inspected as it is brought up every couple of weeks during the season. The cable strands can break at any time. The turning ball should be good for atleast 3 seasons. I have replaced the ball and cable every two years just because I thought it was a good safety idea. I have never had any wear on the ball. I did have 3 cable strands break when the cable pinched on the winch. The pin in the keel attachment has also shown very little wear. I have the new keel attachment and have place washers to keep the cable centered in the new attachment.
