Can anyone tell me what I use to prepare the hull for painting after sanding?I've sanded with 100 grit paper and will be rolling on West Marine bottom shield anti fouling paint.

Can't comment on prep for painting, but do recommend adding a grocery store bottle of cayenne pepper to your bottom paint. We did and am happy to report there are presently no barnacles on our hull since we painted it in the fall of 2005.

Good point Cate - one note - the pepper doesn't do much in fresh water!

How far down did you sand? It will make a difference.

I hadn't heard the one about pepper in the bottom paint in a while. We used to live in Puerto Rico and it is like religion down there to do so. I had a friend whose wife was a nurse and she collected out of date tetracycline to add to their bottom paint. They swore by it. Who knows?

Hey folks--he's in fresh water.

Duane, what are you leading up to--that he chose the wrong paint? (Hint - Hint )

I used the same paint last year and the boat came out of the water looking almost as good as it did going in. I just had a little flaking that needed attention and I decided to sand before I roll on another bottom coat. Last year I just washed the boat down after sanding but may be I'm missing a preperation step?

Only if the can says you are. Most hard paints call for light sanding before re-coating (except when putting on multiple coats in fairly quick succession).

I found the answer, sand with 80 grit paper and wipe the hull down with paint thinner. (after sanding)

I have used a heavy duty scrub pad that goes on the end of a handle. I wet the bottom and scuff up the dead paint. Rinse completely and then paint. I have never had any flaking of paint or a problem. Used ACT on the bottom.
