My son graduated from Virgnia Tech last year. Coincidentally, he and his girlfriend were going to visit a friend down there this past weekend. They had made hotel arrangements prior to the shootings and decided to still go down. He came back yesterday.
There are many issues that will be debated for some time based on what happened - Gun Control; civil rights versus actions that could have been taken; what effect media influence has on frequency of these actions; mental illness, etc. Hopefully, some constructive measures can be gained from all of this.
23 years in the military taught me that the ONLY reason one points a gun is to KILL someone or something. So, my initial reaction was like Brooke's. After consideration, it still makes me uncomfortable to see someone leveling a rifle. Guns are not toys. They are tools used for killing.
The vast majority of gun owners are responsible people; it is the criminals with guns that give gun owners a bad rap. By the way, if anyone wants to know what the US would be like with strict gun control laws, think of the Prohibition era.
I wish I could think of a clever caption, but when you say PWC, you've said it all!
The difference, John, is that when used as designed, alcoholic beverages do not exist for the purpose of killing people. Guns are the only thing that, when used as designed and following the directions, KILL.
You cannot own a hand gun in the UK. Even their Olympic shooting team has to leave the country to practice. Lot less homicides there.
When I raised my right hand and swore to defend the constitution, I did not exclude the 2nd amendment, however.
Some people like guns. That's OK. Just don't pretend that they are necessary in the same way that they were at the time of the American Revolution.
Sorry for the soapbox. Admin, feel free to yank this if ya feel the need.
I share your caption. My original thought was that the guy forgot his binoculars !
As far as gun control, etc....these debates have no resolution here. Therey are hard enough to deal with when discussed in a group. Personally, having a Va Tech graduate, we love the school. It is a shame this had to happen there or anywhere. I do not fault the college administrators. But...I do think a debate and possibly something constructive can come out of how to deal with mental illness and the warning signs. How this treads on civil liberties is the tough one. But possibly some kind of wiggle room on this can emerge especially when you consider we are dealing with public/state schools 9at least in this case) and limited to that, perhaps certain rights/priviledges can be compromised for the well-being of all. Still...I do not like the idea of controls being instituted since they can be mis-used against a lot of innocent/benign individuals. However, in this case, we have a person that was actually reviewed by medical professionals but then was released. I do not think this whole story is out yet. they are still reviewing the info off of his PC and perhaps more will emerge from this that can be useful in the future. Just don't know.
Here Andy posts something with the honorable intention of infusing a little humor into the forum and it turns into something he feels obligated to apologize for.
I think timing was everything in this case. I commented and have no problem with the removal. Last week just wasn't a good one following on the heels of VT. Andy, what you did by removing the picture should be considered being thoughtful...IMHO.
