Not to hyjack the thread, but I do recall as a small boy around 6 or 7 on one of my dads racing boats coming back to the cabin after a race. There was a good sized storm coming in and we were flying the spinnaker. My older brother Greg hated sailing so he was down in the cabin, but I was right in the thick of it, Long story short we got a huge shift and the boom came across the boat hard and got stuck in the running backs, well the boat broaches, and is now pinned down in the water, the chute is skying, and the boat is being drug thru the water sideways. It all happened so fast, but one of the crew cut the running back, got the main free, doused the spinnaker, and we were back up on our feet raising the spinner back up to try and beat the storm.
My brother still hates to sail.
In stronger winds remember to keep the foot of the chute low with the pole, tighten up the sheet and guy to keep the sail flat in the middle, and keep the boat under the spinnaker. If you start to go over remember to blow the vang, and don't let go of the sheet or guy, the boat will be in more control if you have control of the sheets, drop the halyard, and pull it in hard. A wet spinnaker filled with water will really turn a bad situation worse.
Gosh, dont you guys pay your crew???? I always make sure mine are paid after each and every race and that also includes a dinner of their choice of lobster and steak and the finest wine. They are also outfitted with the latest in sailing gear, foulweather gear and gloves.
Oh sorry . . . . I must have gotten hit in the head by the boom.
