Launched "My Joy" Saturday, 80 degree's and sunny and had 25mph south winds Sunday, also sunny!(in Chicago)Best thing about it is I had Lake Michigan almost all to myself. I only saw 2 other sailboats. Of course there was one high powered speed boat running up and down the shoreline while the owner was posing for those on the beach! But us sailors just go out a few miles to get away from these idiots!
If all goes well we splash this Sunday. It is beginning to keep me up at night in anticipation. Last year I pushed the mast up while in the water. This year I think I will do the deed on the trailer. That way we can sail right away. Yippie The best part is Dylan who is almost 6 is really looking forward to it too.
I couldn't wait...I launched today from the marina where I lay up for the winter.
I motored out to open water then set the sails for about an hour or so then headed to the marina where I slip. Everything was going good until the outboard decided it had enough excitement for one day and shut down as I was coming into the marina.

The motor shut down near the point where I throw it in neutral for the glide into slip. I don't usually use my motor much coming in anyway, but with yesterdays' winds being rather brisk and no other boats to provide a windscreen, the extra manueverability of the outboard would've made things just a tad easier. I thought I was gong to be okay speedwise, because the motor quit as I was going directly into the wind, helping me slow down a bit. After making the 90 into the fairway, the wind was abeam and pushing me sideways, but I anticipated this and came in a little higher than normal. After making the final 90 degree turn for the run into my slip, the wind was now on my stern, which started speeding me up again, and me with no outboard to slow me down. Fortunately, I had set up my docklines before I arrived, including the line I use for stopping, which saved my bacon because I had a little too much speed and no outboard to bleed it off...Concrete and steel docks are so unforgiving!

Just unfurled my head sail for 5 knots and didnt even bother with the main. <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">
With the wind being a bit puffy here, I thought of doing that myself (and probably should've) but I hoisted both sails only to discover that I forgot to rig my cunningham...Why is it I find it such a challenge to remember how I rigged my boat last season?
I have been sailing thru the winter except for a period of about 1 1/2 months when the Potomac River froze. Then there was the unbelievable amount of wood floating down that was like a minefield and hazardous go out for another week or so. But this weekend seemed to kick in everyone else starting to get out to there boat and check things out or go out for there initial season's boating.
Along with this busy weekend, we ventured out for awhile but there was considerable wind about 15 mph but gusting to 25. I went out with my main but when it seemed to be calmer, I then unfurled my jib just to have to take it back in when gusts seemed to come with no let up. We eventually came back in as this was enough for my wife's first time out this season. We relaxed back in the finger slip and there was "interesting" activity there as well.
First, we saw a motor boat being towed in by Boat US's Towboat. Not sure what their story was but from the nameplate on the Towboat (Aquia), that is pretty far down the river from us and I doubt he was towed that far but even half that distance would have made a hefty sized bill to start the season. Then there was another motorboat that berths just down from me and they were having a heck of a time getting back into the finger slip. I think they must have tried approaching it baout 6 times but the wind kept blowing them away from the finger slip. We were just leaving then and as I walking past their slip, i was tempted to offer some help with the lines but...well I did not because some people rather just do their thing. But as we walked up the ramp and out the gate, i looked back just as the woman (who owns the boat and must have had her non-boating boyfriend with her) had jumped onto the finger slip and then tried to pull the boat toward her. She could not hold the boat and then..."kerplunk" she went into the drink. I rushed thru the gate and own the ramp and I could se she was just making it to the stern to get back n but just before that, her boyfrined who did not know what to do just stood there as her boat's stern bounced off the main dock and was starting to float away. I thru a line to him as the woman was getting abck on board. Then I had to run to the empty adjacent finger slip and catch the bow and tried to push it off. After the second attempt, I then had her walk toward the bow with the line to pull the boat toward the finger slip. Then they had control and I left.
The other interesting thing was that those birds were back. the ones that sit on my lifelines and take there potty break. I had my CDs out, beach ball on the bow and owl off the back stay but these Purple marins must have gone to anti-bird devices training and did not even give the preventers or us any mind. they had a good time landing on my lifelines. Well...maybe it cut down some of the bird traffic for those that failed the bird preventer training.
Anyway, all in all....a nice day.
Today...temps go into the 80s. I may get out again tomorrow.
WAS SUPPOSED TO SPLASH ON THE EIGHT OF MAY BUT MY SON VOLUNTEERED MY SERVICES AS CHAPERONE FOR A FIELD TRIP TO ELLIS ISLAND. AND SO TODAY WAS THE DAY. AND AS EXPECTED THE WIND BLEW LIKE SNOT, WELCOMING ME TO THE ADVENTURES AWAITING ME.
