I'd like to try my hand at some Wed night racing on the Hudson this year. My boat doesn't have a kite and I'm just wondering what effect that will have and how I get my boat handicapped and by whom.

For a beercan series most clubs will use the standard PHRF rating published for your boat. There should be a non-spinnaker rating... and a 'with spinnaker' rating.

Stay relaxed and enjoy yourself.

Many of your larger PHRF groups do not have ratings that cross over, however they do have JAM fleets. That is the fleet you want to get into.

In the Northwest, PHRF ratings are done for each boat using sail and other measurements for the boat. If you do not have a kite, your rating is different. Hell, if you don't have a whisker pole, your rating is different.

But I understand from others that PHRF/NW is the exception that makes the rule in a lot of things...

Our club also adds a club handicap...So the better you get, the harder it is to win.

PHRF-LE gives a Spin Rating (commonly referred to around here as your PHRF rating) and a JAM rating. They don't cross over.

In most instances, though as you can see everything is different, you will not get credits for lack of equipment. i.e. Kevin's example where there isn't a whisker pole.

In any event - to answer your other question go to the following web page and find out which guy you need to call. I'd go for the closest to home and then work out from there. If you aren't calling the right group, they usually know who you should be calling.

Also try here

and do a plain search on Hudson River PHRF.

Thanks all and especially you, Duane. I'm going to give George Samalot a call tomorrow to see how he can illuminate me.
