Sea trial today for Whatsername...
Just launched off the trailer (engine tipped up a little)
Moving out of the shallows
Loafing along at about 22-knot cruising speed (top is a little over 30)
Idled down to 5-6 knots
Zero weather helm on all points...
Delivery is planned for Wed. 5/2--first trip planned for about two weeks after that.
Sorry... You can get back to sailing now.
Association Port Captain, Mystic, CT Past member and DPO of C-25 #5032 Now on Eastern 27 Sarge (but still sailing) and posting as "Stinkpotter". Passage, Mystic, and Sarge--click to enlarge.
Ya, it'll be a little different around a dock with all that power! ...although not as crazy as with the similar boat (same hull with just a center console) I test-drove with twin 150 Evinrude e-Techs--it was scary!

quote:
...and no more sitting in an open cockpit, hunched over the tiller, getting doused by cold spray!

...or by a sudden rain squall. (I've done all of those things!)
Filled up the tanks in Lauterdale, $150.- for 60 galons. Motored a day and a half out of 6....still have 30 gallons left. Should last me the rest of the season on the Chez.
Delivery was this morning--hoisted her into the water and found both batteries were dead. Jump-started and put a few hours charge on one of them--the engine puts out 60+amps. Took a spin in Fisher's Island Sound, and then filled her up on the way to my slip at the condo. Struggled a little with the wind that was pushing me away from the finger (backing in), but then the wind shifted 180 and it was easy. Next time the wind is on the wrong side, I'll use the slip on the other side of the finger.
Well, my back door is actually 50 yards off to the right, and my view of my slip is blocked from my unit, but I can see the quarter-mile wide river. Kayaking is fantastic! (I have two.)
Draining batteries is bad for them. Recommend putting in a battery switch if you don't have one, but remember to wire the bilge pump directly....(with a fuse in it of course.)
If you want to find out where the leak is you can wire an amp meter in between the batt cables and the battery. Doesn't have to be a large meter, as it is probably not a large leak. Just don't start the engine in that configuration, or you'll fry the meter. Then start looking for the culprit by disconnecting things untill you find it.
Thanks, Oscar... There's a 1-2-Both-Off switch, which was supposedly Off when the boat arrived. (I didn't see that with my own eyes.) The 2 bilge pumps are not on that switch--I manually started and stopped them later, and don't think either was stuck on. The batteries are AGMs--best for tolerating full discharge, as I understand it. (I asked for them.) I don't know if there's a draw, or if somebody at the plant left something on after my trial a week earlier (like the ignition switch). I'm hoping for the latter--I'm about to see if the one I charged yesterday is still good, and will charge the other today. Then I plan to only use one for all purposes, and leave the other as backup--switching roles from time to time.
Nice boat! Are you on the Mistic River? I spent many summers on the river as a kid, but I was too young to tell you were. I could tell you about eels in the lobster pots though...
Yes Dave, where are you? I should be passing by on the 16th......in a brand new stinkpot My dad bought one and we'll be bringing it home from Newport to Greenwich.....
Jarrett: Yes, I'm on the Mystic River--N. of all three bridges (RR, US1, and I95) and the Seaport.
Oscar: Mystic is inside Fishers Island--you'll see the river (large mooring field and marina at the mouth) unless you go outside Fishers through The Race, which can be a thrill ride if the wind is opposing the huge tidal current. You'll be just getting started on... what... a 125 mile jaunt? How big and how fast is this pot? I expect to be here then--I'll e-mail you a cell #, but I won't expect anything. (Hmmm... Newport... Greenwich... I know them both... Probably a nice boat!)
"The Pot" is a Legacy 32........Dad is operating under the misguided opinion that leaving me any money would only corrupt me....
It has plenty of HP (as in 400) to deal with current. A bad ride is something else though. I would appreciate any insight you can offer on this route. I have charts here to follow along.....
Oscar: I've been aboard the Legacies--very, very nice! Mine is sort of a cheap (smaller) knockoff by a commercial boat builder, and the outboard makes her much more practical in the thin water up this river. (Half the draft at the push of a button.)
I sent you an e-mail... Get back with any other questions. I assume you're not looking for scenic side-trips or stopping points...

quote:
...Looks like a nice ride at speed...

...and she'll easily outrun Oscar's dad's boat (on smooth water)! But I can't even go as fast as the sailboats on the Mystic River--40 minutes out, 40 more back in--I'll draw too much wake.
My heart is still on a Catalina... (...well maybe a Cape Dory.)
And when I get home I'll upload a picture of Dave taking a picture of me taking a picture of him....... Here we go.....(Dave I'll be e-mailing you some high-er-res versions....)
