I understand there are no prescribed rules for flying of burgees - which one first etc...are there rules or guidelines for when burgees are to be flown? Do you follow the rules for the American Flag, or is it acceptable to fly burgees over night or when no one is aboard? Many thanks! Fair winds
According to sail edicate, a club burgee is supposed to flown from a "pigstick" at the masthead. since most small boats like hours don't have enough room for radio antenna, windex, and pigstick with pendant, it has become the norm to fly the burgee from a spreader.
I believe it's also customary to fly foreign flags from the spreader - purley courtesy. Care must be taken hwoever to ensure that when you are entering a foriegn port that that counties flag is flown above your club burgee. You may get a shot across your bows otherwise.
Generally, you do not fly a countries courtesy flag until you have cleared customs. When doing that, it is generally best to fly the US flag (yacht ensigns are for US Waters only) and only the US Flag. Once you can remove the yellow quarantine flag as instructed by customs you hoist that countries flag atop the starboard spreader.
