Saturday when I launched, there were only 4 or 5 boats in the marina, and about 120 empty slips, with me being the only boat on my 25 slip dock. On Sunday, while I was down at the boat yanking my carb, a power boat joined me on our lonely dock. Today (Monday), I went down to reinstall the carb, and as I approached the dock I noticed another sailboat, a C25, had pulled in just a few slips away from me. It was obviously a newcomer, since I know just about every boat in the marina, but as I walked closer to this new boat, a feeling of eerie familiarity was washing over me. The bimini, the motor, the cockpit,...Hmmm, where have I seen this boat before?
I walked off the dock and then around behind this boat to a get to a better view of the transom, and as I got closer, I could start to make out the name...<font color="teal"><b><i><font size="4"><font face="Comic Sans MS">La Tina Caliente</font id="Comic Sans MS"></font id="size4"></i></b></font id="teal">
There is only a handful of boats in my harbor as of last weekend. I've had a few conversations with passerbys (walkers) who have mentioned they used to own C25's and really miss them.
How cool is that Don. Jeff, the new owner, called to tell me that he moved the boat half way home and parked it for the week. He said when he entered Lake Erie, he hit 15 kts winds on the nose and 3 to 4 footers. While motoring down the Detroit river he thought he would motor down to Toleto (sp) but when he hit lake erie, he changed his mind.
Hi Dave, you will like Markley. I was there last year and have nothing but good to say about it.....so let me try to talk you into joining the North Star Sail Club. It is closer to the lake and it is allll sailboats. That is where I am slipping Myrtle L. Cheers.
Hi Dave, if you have ANY interest in racing at all, the Clinton River Catalina Association is having its first race meeting Friday night at North Star. Why don't you come by and I'll buy you a drink....of course you'll have to reciprocate. If you do decide to stay are Markley this year, just by joining the CRCA (20 bucks a year), you'll get $200.00 off the price of your Markley slip.
The ABYRA/CRCA Skippers meeting will start at 7:00 PM.
I went down to the marina this evening and as I pulled up to the dock, La Tina Caliente was heading out of the channel and into the lake. There was a cool wind blowing and a few whitecaps off in the distance and La Tina had only her mainsail up. I figured they were taking her to Ohio, but with the direction of the wind and waves, it would have a tough beat going into the night. I watched for a bit as they ventured farther out, then went back to work on my outboard. After 30 minutes or so, I saw a mast coming into the marina channel, it was La Tina returning.
As the crew of three passed my dock, I yelled, "Hey Jeff, not going to Ohio tonight?"
Somewhat surprised, he responded, "No, not tonight...Uh, Did Dennis tell you I was down here?".
I said, "No, Dennis didn't tell me you were down here, I told Dennis."
After they returned to the slip, I walked around and introduced myself to Jeff, his son James, and their friend, Josh. We talked a bit about his new boat and sailing in general. He wasn't going home tonight, they were just here to look it over again and take her for a short spin. On Saturday, they will return for the final leg of their trip to Cawtawba. I wished them luck and they jumped in their vehicle and headed home...Nice people.
I'm glad to hear you met Jeff Don. He seems like a nice guy and, in talking to him, has a long history of looking after old boats, which puts me at easy. Cheers.
