I'll be making the sail from Bridgeport, CT to Stamford, CT during the next week or so and this is the first time I am making the passage as I am moving my boat further south in the sound to a different marina. I would obviously like to make the trip with the influx of the high tide into the sound so I am not working against the tides. Can anyone point me in the direction for the tide tables for the May month and a general recommended time for leaving in the morning?
Times vary by day--the tide cycle is 40-some minutes later each day. The "bible" for tides and currents in L.I.S. is the little yellow Eldrige book--available in any boating store and most marinas. Many marinas have local tide tables in a single-sheet format. The tides are a little later in Stamford than Bridgeport, and the range is greater (6.5 - 9.5').
Stay outside of the Norwalk Islands (unless you study the charts very carefully) and outside of Smith Reef and the rocks off Shippan Point in Stamford. Otherwise, it's a nice little sail, especially if you can catch a SE breeze for a nice reach.
