My new slip gets much more 'action' in terms of tide and wake, I'm changing the dock lines and am researching chafe guards. In addition to the products available at WM, I've seen old garden hose and canvas wraps, leather is traditional, but I've yet to see any. Any one have preferred methods? Thanks!

Ask a fireman for some old fire hose. A few feet of 1"3/4" will do all your lines. Cut to size and whip the ends.

Old garden hose works, but doesn't last long. Once when I was on a concrete pier I rigged up little loops of 1/4 inch chain to the mooring cleats, then made off the mooring lines to the chain. Worked better than anything I have ever done. In essence, the chain just replaces the mooring cleats and there is no bearing surface for the line to chafe.

I've had good results using reinforced hose over docklines where they wrap around pilings. I use the clear high pressure sanitary hose found in hardware stores by the foot. Heavy duty (reinforced) garden hose would undoubtedly work just as well. Don't go too small on the ID, or you'll never the the line through it! (For instance, 3/8" line will not pass through 3/8" hose.)

Whatever you use, make sure its heavy duty. Having to replace a chaffed or damaged dock line is one thing, having one break is a whole 'nuther thing. I had a powerboat damaged by a neighbour's boat when a dock line chaffed, snapped and spent a night bumping up against mine.
I've used fireman's canvas hoses with good results. Also, in a pinch I've wrapped some duct tape on dock lines until I could secure proper chaffe guard.

Yikes...What kind of surgical hose can you fit a dockline through? I hope it's not a catheter?
