Is anyone using Wild Blue Satellite Internet service? I'm thinking about using it as opposed to dial up, but the 18 month contract has me a little scared.
I could go with cable, but the service is mediocre at best in this area.

I installed it at our club, it is great in a rural area but would never use it if a cable modem were available. It uses non standard packets which makes things load strangely.

Mediocre cable or DSL are still way better than satellite.

This is a different satellite service but the packets are wrapped in a larger packet then cached and put back together in the satellite modem and then sent over the network. Things happen in periodic bursts. If you are hooked directly to the modem you can opt for remarkable throughput up and down, if it is going out over wireless it just acts strange. Kicking up any streaming buffers helps.

I have it, because I can only get one-way cable.....one mile from my house in any direction people are zooming two way, DSL...it's very frustrating.

The latency can be frustrating. (Signal up to a satellite....then down to the server, then back up, then down.....they say 2 to 3 seconds.... it's more like 5-6

If you don't download big stuff, dial-up with an accellerator is faster. If you need do download large files, it works. FTP protocols, or some other down-uploads can get interrupted.....(see Franks explanation) and fail.

I'm living with it, buit will switch as asoonas something becomes available.
