Has anyone added an inline fuel filter for your OB motor? I'm thinking about one that also is a water seperator. Any thoughts?

I added one to mine. When I got my boat the metal tank had black stuff floating in it. I strained all the fuel through coffee filters into another gas tank and got most of the black stuff, but not all. I rinsed the tank and got it as clean as I could, but was still worried about contamination, so I put an inline filter in the line. So far so good, and I haven't noticed any accumulation of black crud in the filter yet, but admittedly I haven't checked it recently either. I've only run the engine maybe 30-40 minutes tops since I installed it.

I don't have any experience with a water separator for a gas engine, only diesels.

Had one in mine....simple automotive, or lawn mower filter. Cut hose, insert filter with two clamps. Honda's are sensitive to dirt. Never had a problem.

i have a Honda 9.9 OB. I change the inline fuel filter every year along with the sparkplugs. Empty and rinse the fuel tank every spring.

It's even mounted in the same spot I chose on the first boat. The spin-on replacable element is open with a threaded hole at both ends. There's a (tinted) clear sediment bowl which screws onto the bottom of the filter, and has a drain valve for letting out water and heavy crud.

Before that, I used the little clear-bodied inline filters about the size of a flashlight cell. They stopped dirt OK, especially for 2-stroke carbs. But the humidity around here could overwhelm them with water in no time. I even tried using two in series, before biting the bullet and buying the Racor setup. Since then, no fuel contamination problems.

Looking at my picture, I'm thinking I should've painted the black casting white--for aesthetic purposes...

Dave,

Where's the fuel filter mounted on your new boat?..Next to the compass on the dash?

I think I'd rather be very careful to use up my gas in a reasonable amount of time. Dealing with tides and the ICW makes me use my motor regularly, so not much problem with old gas, but I suppose on a lake you might not need to motor much, so gas might tend to get old on you. Still, with all due respect Dave there is no way I would have that big ole contraption in my cockpit

Well, "with all due respect, Dave," the problem as often as not is crud and/or water that comes out of the pump at the marina. Generally 2-strokes can tolerate a little more of that than 4 strokes, but just a little, and ethanol has greatly exacerbated the problem. Any mechanic will tell you to put one on--unless he's hoping for more business from you. If I were relying on an engine the way you are and didn't want to be stalled in the middle of an inlet, I'd definitely have one--Racor makes smaller ones that don't have the drain. But to each his own...

Dave

Which model Racor filter did you use? Also, where did you find it and what price. I would like to add one to my boat. Seems like a good idea and one less thing to have to worry about.
